About The Department

The Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering was established in the Academic Year 1998-1999 with a sanctioned intake of 60. With its strenuous effort shown in academics and extra-curricular activities, the Department magnified gradual growth in its intake to 120 in the Academic Year 2007-2008. In its long haul, with a vision of providing finest Post Graduate Program, the Department introduced M.Tech in Electrical Power Systems with an intake of 18 in the Academic Year 2004-2005. To add jewel in the crown, the Department inaugurated IEEE students’ chapter in the Year 2017 and IEI students’ Chapter in the Year 2020 for promoting research attitude among the young aspirants. In the quality check of NBA, the Department has been accredited under Tier –I.

The department is unique in its own ways by promoting excellence in Electrical Engineering and fulfilling its role in the era of new millennium and meets the needs and demands of various industrial sectors. With the intent of instilling research approach among students, the department is heedful in Research & Development projects. In its augmentation, the department involves in collaborative research with industries. Coupled with its gradual proliferation, the department has signed MoUs with leading Industries.  The Department has established Centre of Excellence in Renewable Energy Sources for carrying out advanced research.

With determined hope and optimism, the department has dedicated and well qualified faculty members who manifested to be specialized in Power Systems, Power Electronics, Electrical Drives and Control, Control System, Electrical Machines, Renewable Energy, etc. The curriculum is developed in such a way to meet the industry requirements from time to time, also in synchronization with AICTE model curriculum by covering the emerging areas like Renewable Energy Systems, Embedded System, Electric Hybrid Vehicle, Industrial Automation and Control, Artificial Intelligence etc. Besides, the students are replenished with advanced courses for enhancing their technical skills and programming abilities to get acquainted with new trends in technology and develop overall potential of the students in diversified aspects.

Dr. P. DURAIPANDY completed his B.E and M.E in Electrical & Electronics Engineering and Power System Engineering in the year 2004 and 2006, respectively, from K.L.N College of Engineering, Madurai and Arulmigu Kalasalingam College of Engineering, Krishnankoil. He is awarded doctoral degree from Kalasalingam Academy of Research and Education (KARE), Krishnankoil-626126, Tamilnadu, India, in January, 2017. He is presently working as Associate Professor, Head of Electrical and Electronics Engineering Department and Dean IQAC, J. B. Institute of Engineering & Technology, Hyderabad, Telangana, India. He held additional responsibility of Dean Academics during the Academic Year 2018-2019 and Dean Administration during the Academic Year 2019-2020. He is having 17 Years of Teaching Experience (as on May 2024) after completing his PG in various Engineering Colleges. He has published 5 Book Chapters, 2 Books, 27 papers in International Journals (SCI- 8; Scopus-10; UGC/others-9) and 44 papers in Conferences (INC – 27 & NC – 17).  He has 8 Patent Works as a Co-Inventor published in Indian Patent Office Journal and 4 Patent Grants.. His research interest includes Power system voltage stability analysis, Smart Grid, FACTS, Evolutionary Algorithms and Artificial Neural Networks. He is a Professional Member in IEEE and Life Member in ISTE. He has received 2 Best Paper Awards. He has delivered 18 Guest Lectures and Chaired 6 Conference Sessions. MHRD has recognized him as Institution’s Innovation Cell Ambassador to promote and inculcate innovation among students and faculty.  He has participated in 40 Faculty Development Programs and 27 Workshops / Seminars. He was the NIRF and ARIIA Nodal Officer during 2019 and 2020. He has supervised 25 B.Tech Projects and 10 M.Tech Projects. He is also a supervising 1 Ph.D Student. He has successfully completed the NPTEL Online certification exam on “Outcome based Pedagogic principles for effective teaching” with Elite award during September 2017 and “Introduction to Smart Grid” with Elite Award during September 2019. He has also successfully completed the STEP PLUS exam with a level of 11.0 organized by the Hindu NEWS paper Group during January 2018. He was a Member of Toastmasters club during the Academic Year 2017-18.

Laboratories:

The laboratories in department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering are intended to give practical experience to the students. Laboratories are useful for students to implement the theory in practical aspects and helps student to apply their knowledge of theory for various courses of their course outcomes. EEE is equipped with highly developed hardware and software labs, that have superior quality and sophisticated equipment and trainer kits that allows students to design, implement and think beyond horizon. EEE finds its application both in hardware and software these days. Most of the experiments are conducted using both hardware and software tools. All the laboratories are equipped with variety of software tools which are necessity of today’s industrial requirement. The objective of the DC Machines Laboratory is to impart knowledge about characteristics and behavior of the DC Machines, operation of DC machines and give them experimental skill, familiarize with the constructional details of different types, working principle and their performance. It also provides the essential facilities to the students to augment their concepts about the fundamentals of rotating machines. It is well equipped lab to provide experimental and hands-on experience to the detailed study of characteristic and operational aspects of DC electrical machines. AC Machines laboratory is designed for students to perform experiments on transformers, Inductions motors and Synchronous machines. The main objective of this laboratory is to impart knowledge about characteristics and behavior of the AC Machines, operation of transformers, synchronous and Asynchronous machines and give them experimental skill, familiarize with the constructional details of different types, working principle and their performance. Simulation laboratory is designed to familiarize students with the circuit models and simulation techniques. Power Electronics Lab

The objective of the Power Electronics laboratory is to study the characteristics of switching devices and its applications in rectifiers, AC voltage controllers, inverter and choppers. It also acquaint with the application of electronic devices for conversion, control and conditioning of electric power. Further it aids the students to acquire an overview of different types of power semiconductor devices and to cognize the operation, characteristics and performance parameters of controlled rectifiers. The principle of operation, switching techniques, modulation techniques and harmonic reduction techniques in PWM inverters are studied in the lab.  . The lab facilitates faculty and students who are conducting research, industry sponsored projects in power converters in particular and electrical energy conversion in general. Facilities: Silicon controlled rectifier, TRAIC, DIAC, MOSFET and IGBT Characteristics study unit, Operational Amplifier Trainer, DC Chopper power unit, UJT firing circuit, Forced Commutation study unit, fully controlled converter power circuit.

The Electrical Circuits Laboratory assists the students to impart with essential knowledge of electrical and electronic circuit design and analysis and provide hands on experience to design different electrical and electronic circuits with bread boards and with different active and passive components. This Lab gives the practical learning and use of various instruments like Millimeter, Oscilloscopes, Function Generators, Wattmeter’s etc. Along with this, they do practical verification of various electrical theorems, Tests on Transformer, measurement of power in three phase circuits using wattmeter etc. Facilities: Regulated power supply, Cathode ray oscilloscope, Function Generators

Electrical Measurements and Instrumentation Lab

The aim of the Electrical Measurements Laboratory is to reinforce the students with an adequate work experience in the measurement of different quantities and also to expertise in handling the instruments involved. The basic operations of equipment and the process where it might be used, practically realized in the laboratory. It also provides facilities to train the students in the measurement of displacement, resistance, inductance, voltage, current, power, power factor etc., and to give exposure to AC, DC bridges and transient measurement. These instruments and circuits are then implemented in various projects and real time applications.

Facilities: Transformer oil testing set up, Single Phase Energy Meter , DC Potentiometer, Kelvin’s Double Bridge, Schering and Anderson’s Bridge, Current Transformers ,PTS, Strain Guage Kit, LVDT Kit, Dynamometer power factor meter, Resistance ,voltage and current  measurement set ups, watt meters.

Control Systems Lab

The aim of the Control Systems laboratory is to provide sound knowledge in the basic concepts of linear control theory and design of control systems, to understand the methods of representation of systems and getting their transfer function models. It facilitates basic knowledge in obtaining the open loop and closed loop responses to understand the concept of stability of control systems. It also helps the students to study the compensation design for a system. Power Systems Lab

This laboratory is designed to give students hands-on experience on different equipment of electrical power system. This is an advanced laboratory to carry out modeling, simulation and analysis of power system equipments. Students can practically verify several concepts and procedures learned in power system modeling and analysis. This lab has facilities to study the protection of equipment by relays in conjunction with switchgear. This lab also helps to model and analyze the dynamics of power system for small signal and large signal disturbances and design the systems for enhancing stability. It familiarizes with the preparatory work necessary for meeting the next day’s operation and the various control actions to be implemented on the system to get an overview of system operation and control, to understand and model power-frequency dynamics and to design power-frequency controller, to understand and model reactive power-voltage interaction and different methods of control for maintaining voltage profile against varying system.

It covers the fundamentals about voltage and current variation

of solar PV system as well as basic research on PV system and related electronics which would be helpful to the engineering students of both undergraduate and postgraduate level. It will be useful for research students.

It focuses on the characteristics of PV module at different conditions and also on the characteristics of PV systems. All the experiments can be done with the help of digital display meters but some of these can also be performed with logger/plotter unit.

Solar Thermal is one of the simplest Theory and basic technologies in the solar energy   A typical flat-plate collector consists of  field. Collector is the heart of any solar an absorber plate in an insulated box   water heating system. It absorbs and   together with transparent cover sheet() converts the solar energy into heat and then transfers that heat to a stream of  Work and properties of different  water. There are different types of solar components of a flat plate collector  energy collector. In our system we have   used a flat plate collector.

"Does not matter what degree are they pursuing, all the students are eligible to join IEEE as a student member so long as they are pursuing a degree with 50% of the Full time. It's a world wide established technical society, not to mention its the biggest of course" To have an IEEE student branch in an institution brings credit to the institution, since IEEE is the top most professional body in the world. Students of the first batch have taken the initiative in forming the IEEE students branch in the year 2001-2002, with 45 members. the students of the subsequent batches have taken the initiative in getting the branch recognized by IEEE in 2002-2003 and in increasing the membership. Provision is made for IEEE members to access the IEEE Digital library, Weekly meetings of IEEE students Members Achievements include Debates, Group Discussions, Paper Presentations, Guest Lectures etc.

Program:

An inaugural ceremony for the college IEI Students Chapter , of Electrical and Electronics Engineering was held on Tuesday 7th April 2020 at 11:00 A.M. at Placement Seminar Hall, JB Institute of Engineering and Technology, Hyderabad. The Program started as the chief guest and other dignitaries joined Zoom App at 11:00 AM. Mr K.P.Sahu Assistant Professor, Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering of JB Institute of Engineering and Technology, Hyderabad welcomed Chief Guest Dr. G.Rameshwara Rao Garu Chairman IEI Students Chapter, Telangana State.

The program was followed by enlightening the students with the purpose and importance of a Students Chapter. This Students Chapter would be a platform for them to evolve themselves in various prospects of life. It would encourage not only students but also faculties; it is a platform for every individual present in this institution. 150 Students and 14 faculties attended the program. The program was further continued by the inauguration of the Students Chapter, Chief Guest Dr. G.Rameshwara Rao Garu Chairman IEI Students Chapter, Telangana State enlightened on Benefits and Opportunities of Joining Students Chapter. Industry- Institute Interaction Cell

Better interaction between Technical institutions and industry is the need of the hour. This will have great bearing on the Engineering Curriculum, exposure of industrial atmosphere to engineering students and subsequent placement of young graduating engineers in industries across the country. With the advent of globalization and opening up of Indian economy to outside world, competition among industries has become stiff. To solve their engineering problems they look up now to engineering Institutions. Similarly, there is an urgent need to prepare engineering students for jobs in multinational companies, by exposing them to newer technologies and engineering methodologies. These objectives can only be achieved well by bridging the gap between industry and the academic institute.

Research and Development

EEE Department is recognized as JNTUH Research Centre.

Research and Development incorporates a special significance with the exception of its conventional coupling of research project and technological development. The role of R & D Division of the college is to enhance research and Development activities to enable JBIET to become a renowned Intellectual corporation fostering excellent research, development, sponsored projects, consultancy, continuing education and industry Institute Interaction in addition to wonderful teaching.

The R & D division motivates the faculty members and Students to carry out research work in areas of their interest, generate project proposals to seek grants from various funding agencies, establish Centers of Excellence in the college. At JBIET, these are done to motivate the students and the faculty of the Institution, to update the knowledge which leads to further investigation and progress and to give a hand to the industries in their product development. All disciplines of the college are actively engaged in Research, Development and Consultancy activities. The R & D cell of this college has been active in registering for patents, copyrights, publications in conferences, organizing conferences, seminars, and workshops.

The management, knowing the importance of R&D has been magnanimous to sanction necessary funds for the establishment of Laboratories with Lab equipment towards Research and Development. The R & D cell is very active in encouraging registration of patents as one of the IPR activities.

R& D Project Cell Objectives

  • Promote R&D programme in newly emerging challenges in science, technology and engineering.
  • Enhancement of knowledge, capability and a global recognition to institution.
  • Application of qualitative as well as quantitative Research technique to enhance knowledge, capability of students and faculty in relatively unexposed area.
  • Up gradation of workshop and laboratory through MODROB proposals of AICTE, MHRD.
  • To develop research proposal for funding from DST /MNRE/AICTE/MHRD.
  • To organize seminar/Conference/workshop in the relevant area of science & engineering.
  • To assist the students to apply funding for conducting research under student project scheme to various funding agencies like IEI (I), DRDO, etc.
  • To assist for applying and getting funds for conducting Seminar/Workshop/FDP from various available funding agencies.
  • To develop and coordinate strategies for maximizing the faculty's success in gaining external research funding.
  • To maintain and disseminate current information about relevant research policy areas and initiatives in government, in the professions and in relevant industries, including external funding opportunities.
  • To develop strategies to foster research collaborations within the faculty, across faculty and institutes, and with agencies outside the college.
  • To work with various departments to establish and develop faculty research priorities on interdisciplinary areas.
  • To interact with industry, government, professions and the wider community on all research matters promote faculty research activities to external stakeholders.

Short Term Goals

  • Promotion of R&D Activities in of science and technology with special emphasis on emerging domain.
  • Motivate faculty and students to participate in Seminar/Conference/Workshop and further share their knowledge, experience with faculty and students and submission of proposals to R&D cell.
  • To motivate faculty and students to present/publish/Research paper in reputed national & international journals and submit a copy to R& D section in library.
  • To start research programme in science & engineering, this is funded by national &international research bodies.
  • MOTIVATE faculty and students to design and fabricate and implement viable functional projects for the benefit of institution and country. The institution should provide the sufficient level of financial support & facilities as per the progress.
  • Publish journal of science & engineering with ISBN number.

  • Establishing centre of excellence for all departments as per their relevant research areas.
  • Establishing renewable energy park in collaboration with MNRE.
  • Initiating process of establishing research centre in science &technology domain.
  • Initiating a culture or movement that research & academics are complementary to each other. Both are needed for upgrading the standard of education in our country.

  • Students are encouraged to participate in workshops, seminars, paper presentation and project competitions.
  • They are motivated to undertake both in house and industry based projects.
  • Guest lectures, workshops and industrial visits are regularly arranged to focus on thrust areas.
  • Financial assistance is provided for publishing the paper in a peer reviewed journal.
  • Students are encouraged to submit research proposal under student project scheme to external funding agencies on the topic of their project work.
  • Financial assistance is provided for the Student projects also, based on the Merit.
  • "Cash awards" are being provided for best projects.

Initiatives for Faculty

  • Cash Awards are being provided for Research Publication for faculty members in all reputed journals.
  • Financial assistance is being provided for conducting Internal /External Symposia, Internal/External Conferences to initiative the students and faculty members to involve themselves.
  • Faculty members are sponsored for pursuing higher studies.
  • Incentives for publishing papers in refereed impact factor journals.
  • Incentive to faculty for receiving research grant from external funding agencies of Govt. of India.
  • Faculty members are encouraged for interacting with the outside world such as chairing technical Session/invitation as keynote speaker in National/International Conferences, Seminar, Workshop and Guest lecture.
  • Financial assistance is provided for the Student projects also, based on the Merit.
  • Management extends full supports for the fund required for procuring facilities to do the research.

Student Achievements

At Electric car design internship organized by elite techno groups where we designed a electrical ATV. In the internship all the students were divided into a batch of 21 members and in each batch, students were assigned particular departments and we were given the task of completing power train and transmission circuit in electric car which is the heart of the whole system because it drives the car by providing traction effect and in the 8-day internship we learned how to design and simulate a electric ATV virtually and then made the ATV and gained hands-on experience, our team won 1st prize for best electric ATV design.
